Preparing for Your Child’s First Circus Class in Rhode Island: A Parent’s Guide

Circus classes are a super fun and engaging way for kids to build strength, coordination, confidence, and creativity. Whether they’re climbing into their first aerial hammock, learning basic acrobatics, or exploring juggling and balance skills, circus training helps children develop physical literacy and a lifelong love of movement.

At the same time, enrolling in a youth circus program can feel overwhelming for parents. There are different disciplines (acrobatics, aerial arts, juggling), multiple age groups, and varying experience levels. There are a few key things to consider before signing your child up for classes, such as their age, interests, personality, and experience level.

If you’re looking for kids circus classes in Rhode Island, this guide will walk you through the programs we offer at Rhode Island Circus Space and help you confidently choose the right starting point for your child. It will also answer some of the most common questions about the benefits and safety of youth circus programs.

Kids Circus Classes in RI:

How to Choose the Right Youth Circus Class Based on Age & Experience

Currently, Rhode Island Circus Space offers classes for kids and teens ages 6–15. Teens who are 16 or older are encouraged to take adult classes.

We encourage kids to explore multiple disciplines early on. After age 9, students are also welcome to sign up for single-discipline classes like aerial fabric or lyra.

When considering your child’s personality, think about how they like to learn and move. Children who enjoy faster-paced classes or trying many different activities are often happiest in General Youth Circus or Youth Acrobatics. Students (9yrs and older) who enjoy focusing on a single discipline and are able to follow more detailed instructions often thrive in Aerial classes.

Youth Circus Classes

General Youth Circus (ages 6–10)

For younger kids, we offer a General Youth Circus class. This class is perfect for high-energy kids who want to try a little bit of everything.

Classes begin with a warm-up and then rotate through both aerial and ground-based stations. Students are introduced to aerial hammock, lyra, trapeze, fabric, juggling, tumbling, pyramid building, and physical theater.

The goal of this class is to give kids the chance to explore a wide range of circus disciplines in a fast-paced and engaging environment. It’s a great option for students who need to move their bodies after a long day at school or who prefer variety within a class.

Students should be able to follow basic directions and interact kindly and respectfully with others.

Youth Acrobatics (ages 9–14)

This class is another great option for energetic kids who love to run, jump, tumble, and roll.

No prior experience is required. Students are introduced to a wide range of ground-based circus skills, including:

  • handstands

  • partner acro

  • pyramid building

  • tumbling

  • obstacle courses

Students also get to use the inflatable tumble track and mini trampoline.

This dynamic class builds strength, flexibility, coordination, body awareness, and endurance.

**A Quick Note on Aerial Classes

We offer Aerial Fabric (Silks) and Aerial Lyra (Hoop) classes for kids ages 9–15.

Aerial Fabric, also known as silks, is a long piece of fabric hung from the ceiling at its center (so it appears as two strands). Students climb, wrap, and pose in the fabric, eventually learning spins, drops, and dynamic movements.

Aerial Lyra, also called aerial hoop, is a metal circle suspended from the ceiling. Students use the hoop to perform poses, spins, and transitions while building strength and flexibility.

Youth Fabric Level 1 (ages 9–14)

Is your child mostly interested in being in the air and upside down? This class is a great starting point and no previous experience is required.

Because this class focuses on a single apparatus, it involves less running around and requires a bit more focus than Youth Acro or General Youth Circus. If you’re deciding whether this is the right fit for a 9 or 10 year old, consider their attention span, energy level, and ability to follow detailed directions, as well as their interest.

Classes usually include:

  • a warm-up

  • conditioning

  • stretching

  • skill-building on aerial fabric

Students learn the foundational skills needed for aerial training. This class is also a prerequisite for the Level 2 fabric classes.

Teen & Tween Classes (ages 11–15)

Teen Fabric: Levels 1 and 2

Level 1 focuses on foundational skills like climbing, inverting, and basic static poses, along with strength development. No previous experience is required. Students typically stay lower to the ground and progress at their own pace.

Some students remain in Level 1 longer than others, especially if they are new to movement training. Progression to Level 2 is based on the ability to safely demonstrate Level 1 skills, not simply time spent in the class.

Level 2 students continue building strength, endurance, and flexibility while learning higher-level poses, sequences, and dynamic drops.

Teen Lyra: Levels 1 and 2

Lyra Level 1 focuses on foundational mounts, dismounts, poses, and spins performed from the bottom or middle of the hoop. Students build strength and flexibility while learning the basics of the apparatus.

There are no prerequisites, and students move at their own pace. They are invited to Level 2 when they have mastered the Level 1 curriculum.

Lyra Level 2 introduces more complex sequences and higher-level skills. Students begin exploring dynamic movements such as beats (swings) and rolls.

Is Circus Safe for Kids?

Like all movement-based activities and sports, circus classes involve some inherent risk. All students are required to sign waivers before participating. That said, Rhode Island Circus Space uses many systems to reduce risk and support safe learning.

Risk mitigation strategies include:

  • Coaches who are well-trained, caring, and experienced

  • Rigging that meets industry safety standards and is installed and inspected by certified circus riggers

  • Safety-rated apparatus and mats that are regularly inspected and replaced when needed

  • Progression-based teaching, allowing students to build skills gradually

  • Adjustable rigging so apparatus can be set to appropriate working heights

  • Teaching kids how to evaluate risk and make safe choices

  • Listening to student concerns and never pushing them beyond their abilities

Parents are always welcome to stay and watch classes from the lobby viewing windows, and we are happy to communicate with you about any concerns regarding your child’s needs.

What to Expect on the First Day

Once you’ve decided on a class, the first step is to Create an Account and register online. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you through the process. For more registration help, you can also visit our FAQ page or send us an email.

On the day of your child’s first class, there are just a few simple things to keep in mind.

What to Wear

Clothing should be comfortable and easy to move in, but not so loose that it rides up or covers the face when kids go upside down.

Good options include:

  • leggings or athletic pants

  • a fitted t-shirt or shirt that can be tucked in

Leotards and leggings are also perfectly fine if your child already wears them for dance or gymnastics.

What to Bring

Circus classes are active and physically demanding, so we recommend bringing:

  • a water bottle (we have a refill station available)

  • an after-class snack if your child tends to get hungry

  • an extra layer during cooler weather for warm-ups and cool-downs

Once You Arrive

Parking is located beside the building, and you’ll enter through the main front doors.

Inside the lobby:

  • coats and shoes can be stored in the coat closet on the left

  • parents can watch through the lobby windows

  • instructors will call students in at the start of class

Shoes are not allowed on the blue carpeted training floor.

During Class

Classes typically include:

  1. warm-up

  2. stretching

  3. skill training in the main discipline(s)

Every class is slightly different depending on the lesson plan for the day.

Kids are welcome to ask questions, use the restroom, or check in with parents if needed. If your child needs to leave early, just let the coach know at the start of class.

Restrooms

Restrooms are located through the right-hand door at the back of the building.

Because you need to cross the training floor to reach them:

  • remove your shoes first

  • carry them with you or use the provided slippers

It’s best to walk around the perimeter of the space to avoid the hanging equipment.

At the End of Class

When class ends, students return to the lobby to meet their parents.

If you’d like to speak with the instructor, feel free to step into the training space and wave hello. Coaches are usually nearby preparing equipment for the next class.
